Miusov

The Brothers Karamazov

Miusov is a witness in the proceedings against Dmitri Karamazov. Having testified at the preliminary inquiry, he is listed among those expected to take part in the trial, but his absence in Paris prevents him from appearing in person. The contrast between his earlier evidence and his present absence makes him a continuing, if offstage, presence in the case.

Place in the Proceedings

At the opening of the trial, the court’s list of witnesses and experts establishes who is to participate in the proceedings. Miusov is included among four witnesses who are not present. Unlike the witnesses absent through illness, his reason for being unavailable is that he is in Paris.

Earlier Testimony and Absence

Miusov’s absence does not mean that he has played no part in the case: he gave evidence during the preliminary inquiry. The trial therefore proceeds with his prior testimony already belonging to the record, while the witness himself remains away. His brief mention links the earlier investigation to the public court proceedings and underscores how testimony gathered before trial can persist in a witness’s absence.
